Bruce Encounters

A Legmen Look at Bruce

Jack Gage

In one of our earliest encounters with Bruce, Susanne Simon - who now lives in Germany - shares her memories of meeting Bruce back in 1983 after his initial arrival in Hollywood to begin a short-lived run on his first television series, Legmen. Susanne was working in the home of the show's producer and was introduced to Bruce shortly after he got the job. A photo of Bruce from the show can be seen above and Susanne's pleasant memories are captured below:

From Susanne:

I met Bruce in the Fall of 1983 in the house of the producer of "Legmen". He had just got his part on the show and was new in town. What struck me most about Bruce was his sunny desposition, his sense of humour, a positive attitude towards life in general and all that energy he had. There was nothing to lose for him at that time and you could tell he was determined to make the best of everything that came his way - a "down to earth" guy but with a potential to reach and touch the sky. Even though the shooting of Legmen was a fun thing for him to do, Bruce did not seem to be thoughtless or carefree about it. He carefully weighed the pros and cons necessary for a decision - in 1983 he was not sure whether he'd like L.A. and all that "film stuff" - in fact, he had far-reaching thoughts about that. - Well, I guess in the end L.A. and "all that film stuff" won. (I'm glad it did!!)

When I first met Bruce I had my Mom with me - she was visiting me from Germany and she didn't speak a word of English. Bruce (who didn't speak a word of German either) didn't care and started a conversation nonetheless in a very polite manner. It amused me wondering if either one of them knew what the other one was talking about. But I also thought to myself that Bruce was definitely not one of those typical young Hollywood actors - he seemed to have his principles and moral values and although everything was more ore less easygoing at that time Bruce was a sophisticated type of person (I'm sure he still is!!!)

Some small details come to my mind when I remember Bruce way back then: he was so good-looking, dashing, handsome, charming, friendly, talented and always a hidden smile on his face - just simply so natural! ... and yes, I think I detected that he was ambitious as well (don't forget, that this was the time to still fool around - was that film stuff really going to be something serious??). - That brown leather jacket he was wearing and those lines around his eyes just seemed to match in a wonderful way his personality. "A guy to steal horses with" we'd say in Germany. - It's good to know that some things never change!
