Bruce Greenwood as John Ripley

(1988 independent film; released 5/19/88 at the Cannes Film Festival)

Bruce Greenwood plays the leading role in this independently produced fantasy about a womanizing soap opera actor who cheats on the one girl he loves and sees his whole world fall apart. Morally deficient with way too many women at his instant disposal, heartthrob actor John Ripley uses every trick he knows to win the heart of model Jacky Johansson, only to succumb - a little too readily - to the wiles of the devil's emissary (played by frequently unclad Playboy playmate Barbara Edwards). After catching John in a decidedly compromising position, Jacky leaves him, setting off a downward spiral in which John loses his job, his home, his agent, his friends and, of course, all the beautiful women who'd gravitated to him during his tv star days. A light comedy with serious overtones, the tale is told in flashback as a now dead John Ripley tries to convince St. Peter to give him -- another chance.

An engaging low budget movie with an extremely attractive young cast, the film was being made just as Greenwood was signed to his high-profile role in St. Elsewhere, a time of great glamour for the actor which somehow suits the film. A decided favorite with fans, Greenwood has never been more appealing, especially when cavorting with his endearing German Shepherd, Rocky. lt's a pleasing little movie that's cute as well as very personal. The director - Jesse Vint - has a fun cameo as the T.V. newsman who's with Jacky just before John gets shot, the Unit Production Manager - Alan Godfrey - plays the soap opera director and Alex-Sandra Abbey - who has a small role as a woman Rocky picks up for John near the beginning of the film - is also the producer's assistant as well as a creative consultant. Even the wardrobe man has a role as St. Peter's Emissary. So there's a small, family atmosphere throughout.

Although made in 1986, the film wasn't released till 1988, debuting out-of-competition at the Cannes Film Festival before a limited run in the United States. It's never been aired on television, but it has had a healthy life on video.

There's one small Nowhere Man tie-in: Karen Witter who plays Janet of "kiss kiss - back at you" fame in Stay Tuned is Nancy, the beauty contestant John picks up after being dumped by Jacky.
