Exotica
DVD Extras

There were no extras included on the DVD of Exotica, but it does constitute the best possible copy of the film. Since this was an early DVD, and since Atom Egoyan has expressed interest in re-releasing it, there remain some hopes a version with commentaries will be released at a later date

There were a lot of reviews of the DVD, however, along with some comments on Miramax's packaging of the video and DVD to look more like a sex film than a serious psychological study. A few of the misguided views and serious comments follow:

The Best Video Guide:
1995; R; 104 mins; Erotic Thriller
The BVG skinny: Lonely accountant mourning a loss frequents an exotic strip club, where he looks for solace in the beautiful dancer with whom he's obsessed.

Australian Multimedia Magazine:
EXOTICA - A bit of an arthouse tits_&_arse movie. Perhaps an American college movie set in Europe? Lots of semi-naked women dancing on tables, a little bit of lesbian tonsil hockey and a slimy DJ going on about schoolgirls' innocence. Really, all a bit innocent to be whacked with such a harsh rating. A lush tale of fantasy and intrigue exploring the lives and psychoses of a table dancer (Kirschner), the pregnant owner of the strip club "Exotica" (Arsinee Khanjian), the clud's DJ (Koteas), a haunted tax collector (Greenwood) and a highly strung pet shop owner (McKellar). How they come to be tangled together in a painful web of past and present is bizarre and fascinating.

Blockbusters Chartbusters
Exotica. Bruce Greenwood, Mia Kirshner.
This movie centers around a club, an opera house, a pet shop. If that doesn't make you curious about the movie, keep reading. The film explores the complex relationships between erotic entertainers and their clients. It's a seductive story of a lonely tax auditor who creates a fantasy world around his favorite dancer at the strip club Exotica. The movie questions the foundations of relationships, the nature of desire, as well as their misconceptions. Rated: R

The film was also nominated for the Adult Video Award for "Best Alternative Video" along with "Nude Bowling Party," "A Clockwork Orgy", "Generally Horny Hospital," "Blistered Your Buns," and"Sgt. Pecker's Lonely Hearts Club Gang Bang".  Atom Egoyan's comment upon learning of this last honor (which appeared in Eye Weekly, Toronto's art newspaper 1/18/96):

"Good God. They don't mean the same Exotica? I'm always surprised when people are aroused by the film, because that was not my intention. The primary relationship between Francis and Christina is platonic.  Certainly the environment is seductive. Some people have said the structure of the film is erotic.  But I can't imagine watching the film waiting for an erotic charge because that's not what it's about."

Egoyan thinks that the packaging of the film for the U.S. video market might have had something to do with the nomination. But he isn't displeased by the recognition --
