Confronting SamSheriff Earl

(2000 film)

Bruce Greenwood plays Earl Cavanaugh, a small town sheriff and the father of Leelee Sobieski in this feature film for Fox 2000 (formerly 20th Century Fox), which concerns a family's efforts to deal with the torching of their diner by a rich "kid from out of town," who falls in love with their teenaged daughter while working off his sentence. Sobieski headlines as the daughter with Chris Klein cast as her sophisticated new boyfriend and Josh Hartnett as her old one, while Bruce and Annette O'Toole co-star as her parents and Elaine Hendrix plays her older sister.

Greenwood described the film as a teen-aged version of Terms of Endearment, and indeed the film belongs to the youngsters. Attempts are made to give all three teenagers full character development, but the adults are either villains or heroes with Greenwood's sheriff the most heroic of all as he hovers bravely in the background of his daughter's melodramatic storyline. There's not nearly enough screen time here, but he does have two sweet scenes as her grieving father.

Filmed during the summer of 1999 in Welch, Minnesota, the lush locations were apparently a treat for the entire cast and serve the film especially well. The movie was released in April of 2000 and went to video and DVD in June of that same year.

Produced and released by Fox Pictures, c. 2000.
