The character I play is pretty straightforward. Jack is devastated by the death of his wife Anne, but he can’t let go. I really enjoyed playing Jack, because of the powerful emotions he goes through which sometimes requires me to draw on things, painful things, from my personal life. And sometimes the emotion just comes to me, which is a good thing because when we’re done I’m not in that dark place anymore.
With the writer on set much of the time, it was a great chance to be part of the creative process. Having the writer or director come up to you and say "help us write a great scene" as opposed to some executive dictating a new scene word for word over the phone, is a really great feeling. And this way our re-writes had a lot more impact because the actors, who really know their characters, were a part of the process.
Working with Daryl was real fun and a great laugh. I was really intrigued by the notion of working with her, she’s done a lot of really interesting projects over the years. We had a really good time doing our scenes together. In fact, the first one had her in a nightie and me in my underwear, so we had a chance to chat and hang out under the sheets with about 30 other people in the room!
[Jennifer Tilly] rolled me up in a carpet and beat me. It was good
fun.......You can only act with your head. You can only thrash
around like a burrito. Unfortunately, it wasn't a new carpet. It was taken from the very
back of an antique shop. They rolled it up to show me what
it was going to look like and when they unrolled it, there were huge
clouds of lice and dust and filth.. Even the crew
went (yuk).
There’s a scene in which I had to be rolled up in this smelly, mite-infested old carpet which was especially funny. Not the scene itself and certainly not the carpet but what we had to do in order to get me into the carpet! Because the room wasn’t big enough to unroll the carpet and get me in it there, we had to move to another location outside of the studio. The unrolled it and wrapped me up, then five guys picked the carpet up and carried me to set.
[on being rolled up in the carpet] Nightmarish. Not a pleasant experience. |
