Bruce Greenwood plays Bennie Macko in this off-beat comedy starring Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett as two Los Angeles Police Department homicide detectives who moonlight at other jobs. Macko is the Internal Affairs officer investigating Joe Gavilian - Ford's character - whom Macko is convinced is a crooked cop and in dire need of a major comeuppance. Their testy relationship is further complicated when Gavilian becomes entangled with Macko's ex-wife, a sexy if eccentric late night talk show host and fortune teller played by Lena Olin.
A high-speed comedy with lots of over-the-top slapstick action, the movie was crammed so full of unconventional characters and starry cameos it was difficult for anybody beyond Ford and Hartnett to shine. Still, Greenwood's part is large enough to satisfy most his fans, and he shows an unwitting flair for comedy in a very funny interrogation scene. Also of interest, it was on the set of this movie that Greenwood met Dwight Yoakam (who plays the major villain) with whom he later hooked up musically.
Originally entitled Two Cops, filming began in August 2002 in Los Angeles with lots of pre-publicity and a bevy of attached co-stars. Bruce Greenwood joined the production in mid September. The movie was released with considerable fanfare as a Summer blockbuster on June 13, 2003, (while Greenwood was out of the country and unable to attend the premiere), but despite its much heralded beginnings, the film never became quite the financial success anticipated. The video was released without DVD extras on October 7, 2003.
