Mitch Yost's early morning surf is interrupted by two men - one a stranger.
Mitch rudely dismisses both, but promoter Linc Stark follows Mitch back to his car.
Linc hands Mitch a promo tape sent to him by Mitch's grandson, Shaun.
While wetting down after his surf, Mitch experiences a strange sensation.
Mitch thinks his mind is hallucinating as his body levitates off the ground.
Back at their surf shop Mitch watches Shaun's tape and yells at Cissy for letting it happen.
Ordering Shaun to the back, Mitch forbids Cissy to endorse Shaun's competitive surf at Huntington.
Cissy shoots a barb back and Mitch tells her he has brain cancer.
Mitch has retreated to his private clubhouse behind the shop, where Cissy finds him.
Mitch truly believes he's ill, but Cissy can't quite understand why.
Sensing Mitch's despair, Cissy suggests "the healing power of sex."
Mitch asks Cissy about Shaun's reaction to Huntington, unaware Cissy let him go.
Cissy offers to buy a camera to record the levitations, but moves away when Mitch reaches over
After Cissy leaves, Mitch cautiously tests his feet to be sure they're really touching the floor
Mitch gets a nasty call from Butchie about letting Shaun surf at Huntington.
Mitch storms into the motel to fight with Butchie, but they are interrupted by a gunshot.
Everybody runs for cover until Bill disarms Barry Cunningham.
At the police station Mitch tries to ignore a fawning Meyer Dickinson.
Sarcastically thanking him, Mitch moves away quickly to talk to Butchie.
Mitch and Butchie compare notes on John.
Nodding for privacy, Mitch stumbles out an embarrassed apology to Butchie.
After Butchie haltingly reciprocates, Mitch tells his son he has brain cancer.
Mitch asks Butchie if he's levitating - the major symptom of his cancer!
As they uncomfortably bond, Mitch begins to rise.
Both Butchie and Bill have now witnessed the levitations.
An oddly forgiving Mitch suggests to Cissy they all "get wet."
On the beach Mitch lets Shaun surf, leaving him alone with Cissy.
Cissy admits urging Shaun to go to Huntington, even though Mitch "forbade it."
Mitch admits he doesn't have cancer - and he still doesn't want to surf publicly.
With all its imperfections, Mitch and Cissy Yost face their life and the end of their day.
