(1989 made-for-tv movie; originally aired 11/19/89 on NBC)
An extremely popular mystery series featuring Raymond Burr as Perry Mason and Barbara Hale as his secretary Della Street, these two-hour made for TV movies continued for many years after the series was cancelled using the same cast and the same formula and meeting with the same viewer success. Produced by the same team as another popular series, Matlock, Bruce Greenwood's story line sounds oddly similar his role in that 1987 TV movie. He plays the weak and ineffectual son of a wealthy businessman whose murder makes him the primary candidate because he's wasted his Mother's inheritance and is having an affair with his stepmother (played here by soap opera star Deidre Hall). His character is older this time and the Perry Mason scripts traditionally make all the characters seem unsympathetic so that they could all be possible suspects, but it's still an attractive vehicle and there actually is an affair, as it turns out. The mystery is tight as well and even involves him as the intended victim. The writing and direction (by Christian Nyby II) may be formulaic, but there’s no denying the success of this show, whatever the format. They remain popular even today. Typical of these 2-hour Perry Mason movies, regular cast is used prominently, which does limit Greenwood's screen time considerably.
An NBC Production available through VIACOM, these movies aren’t available for purchase but they are repeated often on television.
