TV movie (first aired 10/24/99 on CBS)
A romantic fantasy with humor, Bruce Greenwood plays Zachariah, a heavenly "soul collector" who helps guide human spirits to their next place after death. When he becomes jaded about his job, his supervisor (played by the legendary Ossie Davis) is dispatched to put him back in line. As part of his punishment he must spend 30 days as a human, and during his stay on earth he meets and falls in love with a widowed rancher (Melissa Gilbert), becoming enmeshed not only in her life, but her son's and friends', as well.
This movie-of-the-week for CBS-TV aired on Sunday, October 24th in the prime time slot immediately following the hugely popular "Touched by an Angel," and suited its placement perfectly, coming in 8th (or 9th depending on polls) in the week's Nielsen Ratings. Sweet and gently uplifting, it showcases Greenwood and Gilbert charmingly, who are nicely paired in a series of very "un-angelic" love scenes.
Directed by Michael Scott ("Murder at 75 Birch") from a script by Joyce Brotman that was based on the book "Pocketful of Paradise" by Kathleen Kane, the lush locations were shot just outside Austin,Texas. A particular favorite with his fans, the film proved to be Bruce Greenwood's last made-for-tv movie. Unfortunately, it has never been released on video.
